1. Mechanism of THPS in cooling water treatment
Due to the special ecological environment of the circulating cooling water system, it is easy for microorganisms to propagate in large numbers. At the same time, the large number of microorganisms will produce a large number of microbial slime in the circulating cooling water system. The large-scale reproduction of microorganisms and the slime produced during the reproduction will make the water quality of cooling water deteriorate rapidly, and the corrosion and scale inhibitor will fail, which can lead to the corrosion of the metal equipment in the cooling system. In serious cases, the pipeline may be blocked, which directly poses a threat to the safety and normal production.
In order to avoid this kind of situation, the most direct way is to add THPS to control the microbial reproduction in the system.
The structural formula of THPS is: [(CH2OH) 4P] 2SO4, in which the phosphorus atom belongs to the fifth main group element. The SP3 hybrid orbital is used to connect with the other four hydroxymethyl groups to form a tetrahedron. The phosphorus atom carries a positive charge, and the molecular structure is very stable. Due to the larger radius of phosphorus atom, its polarization increases and the surrounding positive electricity increases, so it is easier to produce electrostatic adsorption with negatively charged microorganisms, which is easy to kill microorganisms, with high killing activity and no side effects on the environment.
In the 1980s, as an effective biocide, THPS was initially used in the cooling water system of the UK. In 1995, THPS obtained the EPS registration as a biocide, which opened up the US market. Relying on a large number of ideal data on toxicity and environmental safety compared with traditional biocides provided by EPA registration, THPS won the "US president's Green Chemistry Challenge Award 1991".
2. Excellent characteristics of THPS in water treatment
a. broad spectrum: THPS can kill fungi, bacteria and algae, Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria and mold, but also sulfate reducing bacteria has a particularly strong killing effect.
b. High efficiency: it can kill microorganisms in the surface layer and deep layer of clay

The ecotoxicological test shows that THPS has low aquatic toxicity, lower toxicity to fish, no killing activity, short residence time in the environment, and is easy to be biodegraded. Some experiments show that, for industrial water treatment, using 50ug / g THPS, 2.5 X105 SRB / ml can be killed to 2.7 X103 SRB / ml in 6 hours; in the cooling circulating water of a distillery, THPS is 12mg / L, which can reduce the number of bacteria by 105 times, and the slime disappears: the LC50 of THPO to rainbow trout (96h) is more than 5000mg / L, and the LC50 of THPS to rainbow trout (96h) is more than 119mg / L
g. THPS has excellent solubility. It does not react with other water treatment agents (scale inhibitor and corrosion inhibitor) in the system, and has no corrosion effect on the system metal. It can be used in a wide range of pH. it can be used with all kinds of corrosion inhibitors and scale inhibitors with negative charge at the same time, and it is not easy to foam. It does not affect the use effect of corrosion inhibitor and scale inhibitor, and the germicidal effect of THPS is not reduced, It can even have synergistic effect with ionic corrosion inhibitor, and at the same time it can improve the effect of corrosion inhibition, scale inhibition and biocide.
