Introduction:

White hexagonal plate crystal or white crystalline powder; Melting point 258℃; Soluble in dilute acid and alkali solutions, extremely insoluble in water, insoluble in ethanol.

There are three isomers: left-handed (L-(−) -cystine), right-handed (D-(+) -cystine), and meso-racemic. It is easy to be reduced by reducing agents such as ethyl mercaptan and dithiothreitol, and the disulfide bond is divided into two cysteines after reduction, and heating will also break the disulfide bond.

L-Cystine is a naturally occurring amino acid that plays a crucial role in various biological processes. It is a dimer of cysteine and is involved in the formation of disulfide bonds that stabilize protein structures. L-Cystine has a wide range of applications across different industries:

  1. Pharmaceuticals: L-Cystine is used as a precursor in the synthesis of cysteine, which is essential for the production of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant. It is often used in treatments for conditions like cystinuria, where cystine crystals form in the urinary tract, and for boosting immune system function.

  2. Cosmetics and Personal Care: L-Cystine is used in hair care and skin products due to its ability to strengthen hair and improve skin health. It promotes keratin production, which helps in maintaining hair strength and elasticity, and is commonly found in shampoos, conditioners, and skin creams.

  3. Nutritional Supplements: L-Cystine is included in many dietary supplements for its antioxidant properties and its role in promoting healthy hair, nails, and skin. It is often marketed as a supplement to support hair growth and reduce hair thinning.

  4. Animal Feed: In livestock and poultry feed, L-Cystine is added to improve animal health and growth. It supports protein synthesis and can help enhance the nutritional value of the feed.

  5. Food Industry: L-Cystine is sometimes used as a dough conditioner and additive in the baking industry, improving the texture and quality of bread and other baked goods.

  6. Industrial Applications: L-Cystine is used in biotechnological and chemical processes, including protein purification and the development of bioactive compounds.

L-Cystine’s versatility in applications across health, beauty, and food industries makes it a valuable ingredient for various commercial products.
